Avi-Adopt: Lou, the Cockatoo - $25.00
Avi-Adopt: Tristan, the Macaw - $25.00
Tristan came to PEAR TREE in November of 2006 and although
she is very phobic of new things, she is really quite friendly
and truly desires attention. She has been taken to a few
educational programs for socialization - and so far she has
done really well. We are still working on her feather growth.
She does have a few new feathers coming in and for the most
part, she no longer picks at her feathers. But we are still
working to get her through a complete moult. In addition, we
need to take her in for more testing - some of her skin remains
quite irritated and we are trying to determine the cause.
Skin biopsy and avian vet testing is quite expensive.
Eventually we will place Tristan back into a family
environment, but we still have a long way to go with her
rehabilitation.

Lou is a 6 year old, male Umbrella Cockatoo. He came to PEAR
TREE Avian Sanctuary in March of 2007. His previous owners had to
part with him due to schedule conflicts and life changes. Prior to his
arrival, Lou plucked and barbed his feathers strongly due to lack of
interaction and boredom. His feathers are starting to fill in on his
chest and back, but the feathers on his wings and tail will take
awhile longer to grow. Lou also has a problem with recurring
cloacal prolapse. Since his arrival he has undergone six surgeries
surgeries to help correct the problem. After much healing, his vent
is significantly smaller than when we began. Thus far he has only
experienced minor difficulties. We hope this most recent surgery
will permanently resolve this problematic condition for Lou. Thanks
to the help and care of our wonderful Avian Veterinarian, Dr. Hardy,
Lou's medical expenses have been extemely low considering the
situation. Every bit adds up, and Lou still has a long road to
recovery.

Daisy is a Blue and Gold Macaw. She was wild caught over 33
years ago so we do not know her true age. She was pinioned on
one wing (partially amputated to permenantly prevent flight) prior
to her arrival at our local zoo. She lived with her mate, a male
Blue and Gold Macaw for 24 years in a large indoor/outdoor exhibit
aviary. In the spring of 2007, a male iguana was introduced into
their environment and a fight between the male macaw and the
male iguana broke out. Unfortunately Daisy was caught in the
middle - she was unable to get out of the way since she could not
fly. The fight resulted in the loss of Daisy's other wing. It suffered
severe damage and had to be amputated. Daisy was already
missing a few toe nails from scuffles over the years with her cage
mate and between the exhibit wire with the other parrots. With her
complete loss of flight and most of her defenses, she was
relinquished to PEAR TREE to retire. Here she will have the
opportunity to live out her life, have indoor/outdoor access, and be
around other birds. Daisy is not a handleable bird, but she is very
sweet. She will gently accept food from our hands and watches
intently as we handle and snuggle with the other birds around her.
We have no expectations for her - only to be happy. Currently we
are raising money to expand the current outdoor flight cage to give
Daisy the best retirement possible.
